Okuden, which translates as the “hidden or inner teachings,” is the second level of training in the Usui lineage of Reiki. At this level, you become attuned to the energy of the Reiki symbols and learn how to incorporate them into your sessions. You will add depth to your knowledge and understanding of techniques for protection, mental and emotional healing, and how to send distance Reiki. This is the level recommended to begin practicing Reiki professionally.

About The Reiki Symbols
The Reiki symbols are sacred. Until recently, they were kept secret so that their true essence could be preserved.
-
How The Symbols Work
There are four symbols in the Usui lineage of Reiki, however, Usui Sensei only used the three symbols from the Level 2 training.
-
Invoking The Symbols
There are many ways to invoke the symbols once you are attuned to them.
-
The Power Symbol
The Power Symbol has its origins in Sanskrit. The mantra for the Power Symbol is Choku Rei, which means, “placing all the powers of the Universe here.” It can also be translated, “put the power here,” “God is here,” or “by imperial decree.” Its three main functions are empowering, cleansing, and protecting.
-
The Harmony Symbol
The origin of the Harmony Symbol is Sanskrit. In the West, this symbol is also referred to as the Mental/Emotional Healing Symbol. The mantra for this symbol is Sei Heki (pronounced “say heh kee”), meaning to “make things straight,” “key to the Universe,” “Man and God becoming one,” and “to create a new habit.” Its main functions are to restore mental and emotional balance and bring a deep sense of peace to the heart and the mind.
-
The Connection Symbol
The Connection Symbol has its origins completely in Japanese kanji. In the West, this symbol is also referred to as the Distant Symbol. Its mantra is Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen (pronounced “hōn shah zeh show nehn”). It can be translated as “the origin of all is pure consciousness,” “I unite with God,” or “The Buddha in me reaches out to the Buddha in you to promote enlightenment and peace.” The main function of this symbol is to be the bridge between time and space.

Okuden, Reiki Level 2 Attunement
-
How Does The Attunement Work?
Unlike other techniques of energy balancing and healing, the ability to channel the Reiki energy is transferred from the Reiki Master Teacher to the student during the Reiju, or attunement (sometimes referred to as an ‘empowerment’) process. This is a sacred spiritual initiation that connects you directly to the Reiki Source. There are no specific requirements or experience necessary to receive this beautiful energy. All that is required is a willingness to learn and an openness to receive.
-
Prepare For Your Attunement
Preparing for your Reiki attunement can enhance your ability to experience the attunement energy more deeply. The clearer we are in body and mind, the more deeply we can access our spirit. That being said, we are all at different stages of our journey. The attunement will “work” whether or not you are willing or able to follow the steps below.

Clearing Your Reiki Space
Once you are attuned to the three Level 2 Usui Symbols, you can begin incorporating their energy into your home and business energy clearing practices. This practice builds upon the steps outlined in Clearing Your Reiki Space in Level 1.
-
Reiki Self-Healing
Once you become attuned to the Reiki symbol frequencies, you can practice incorporating them into your Reiki self-healing. Always allow your intuition to guide you as to what symbol to invoke.
-
Giving A Reiki Treatment
Once you are attuned to the symbols, you can incorporate them into your Reiki practice during the Chiryo, or treatment, part of your sessions.

Jacki-kiri Joka-ho- Removing Negative Energy From Objects
Jacki-Kiri is a technique for clearing and/or transforming energy from objects. Jacki means “negative energy” and kiri means “to cut.” Joka means “purification, cleansing” and ho means “treatment, method, way.” It works by clearing any negative energies from the object and then cleansing it with Reiki.

Becoming A Reiki Practitioner
-
The Reiki Path
The information shared in the following lessons comes from my experiences with creating a successful and thriving Reiki practice.
-
Communicating About Reiki
One of the most important aspects of being a Reiki practitioner is the ability to confidently communicate what Reiki is and how it can help someone on their healing journey.
-
Session Length
Receiving Reiki for any amount of time is beneficial. You can offer five minute mini-sessions at a health fair or local farmer’s market, or two hour (or more!) sessions. Both the practitioner and the recipient will benefit regardless of the session length.
-
Energy Exchange
My Reiki students frequently ask questions regarding when to begin charging for Reiki sessions and how to price them. While exchange through currency is one way of reflecting an offering for a service received, it is not the only way.
-
Employment
After practicing Reiki on friends, family, and yourself you may want to start sharing Reiki with your community. As mentioned above, there are many different ways to share Reiki outside of your home.
-
Starting A Practice
Another way to share Reiki with your community is to start your own Reiki practice.
-
Business License And Insurance
Each country, state, and sometimes even city has different laws around practicing Reiki. It is important to educate yourself on what the laws are in your town before opening your practice.
-
Marketing
Whether you are an employee or starting your own Reiki practice, you will want to let your community know that you are offering Reiki.
-
Reiki Intake Form
Laws regarding Reiki and hands-on healing vary from country to country or even city to city, so be sure to research the laws where you plan to practice Reiki.
