One of the most common questions I receive is, “Who does Reiki for you?” The answer is one of the reasons I love Reiki so much: I can do Reiki on myself any time, anywhere.
While it does feel nice to surrender into the hands of another sometimes, we can learn to balance our own energy. Now, this usually does not happen over night. It is something that comes with commitment and practice regularly. One of my first lessons with this was when I was recovering from ACL reconstructive surgery in 2010.
I tore my second ACL playing in a woman’s soccer league in the Winter of 2009. I heard and felt that telltale “POP,” and I knew what had happened. I tore my first ACL playing soccer in 2000 when I was 16 years old and remembered that recovery taking a long time. I dreaded having to go through the surgery and rehab all over again. But, I made the decision to do go through with it so that I could continue my active lifestyle.
So, in January of 2010 I had the surgery and began what I thought would be the long road to recovery. Luckily for me, I had taken Reiki Levels I & II the year prior! I committed to breathing, meditation, and Reiki self treatment daily. I would sit in my guest bedroom, elevate my knee, and play my go-to Medicine Buddha Mantra on Youtube. Next I would do as many healing breaths as I needed to center myself. When I felt ready, I would begin to perform Reiki on myself.
Reiki is its own spiritually guided energy, so when you become attuned to the Reiki energy by a Master Teacher, you become a channel for the energy. It takes your ego out of the way, and you become a conduit for the Reiki energy to flow through. Because it is spiritually guided, the energy flows to wherever it is needed regardless of where you place your hands. It becomes a beautiful blend of using your intuition of where to place your hands, but then a reverent surrender to a healing power outside of yourself.
I am happy to report that my knee healed much quicker than my first surgery, and I attribute this to my daily practice, intention, and Reiki. Since that time I have performed Reiki on myself for numerous other things. When I need assistance in balancing my emotions, when I am having difficulty sleeping, or when I want to manifest something, I feel blessed and grateful to know how to channel the Reiki energy. It is a gift that has changed my life and allowed for a deep sense of inner peace.
