The Esalen Institute is a place of healing and peace. The Winter Solstice is the darkest day of the year. We celebrate and set our intention for the coming months, knowing that each day will become lighter and longer. It is a time to reflect on the past year, our successes and shortcomings, and get clear about the direction we hope to go in the next year. What better place to do this than Esalen!

I first began taking workshops there after hearing about it from one of my massage school instructors. She was trained there, and spoke of its magic. For the last two years, I have traveled 6 hours up the coast to take Sarana Miller‘s Winter Solstice Yoga Retreat. From our first meeting, I felt connected to her. Her practice speaks to me with a lightness and depth I have not experienced with any other yoga instructor, and so, I wanted to learn from her.

After approaching her about becoming her humble student, she said the best way to learn would be to assist her at her workshops. I was overjoyed that the first time I would be assisting her would be at one of my favorite places in the world, the place we first met, and on the weekend of my 30th Birthday. You could say the “stars were aligned!”

Our weekend was filled with loving practice and holding sacred space for others to heal. The grounds at Esalen nurtured our bodies and our souls. Relationships were deepened, and new friends were welcomed with open arms. Words cannot describe how full my heart felt. It is my wish that everyone can feel the abundance of love and gratitude I felt that weekend. Let us welcome the light in again!
